What is the Effect of Morning Sunlight?

One of the world’s greatest experts in Ayurveda, the traditional system of health in India, has recommended the following simple habit as a powerful tool to improve health: Bask in the light of sunrise each morning. One effect of morning sunlight is to stimulate a pigment in the eye known as melanopsin, which then sends a signal to our central biological clock located in the brain. This helps synchronize all of the clocks in our body to be in tune with the rhythms of nature. Signals are then sent to the pineal gland, to stop the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, and to the adrenal gland to stimulate the production of the hormone, cortisol, the wake up hormone (it is also the called the stress hormone since it is over-produced during times of stress).
Photons of light that pass through the skin and directly stimulate our cells use an entirely different pathway. Research shows that both red and Near infrared light (NIL) can have remarkable healing effects on the body. It is suggested by Dr. Mohammad Muneeb Khan, an oncologist in England, that early morning sunlight, which contains Near infrared light, penetrates the skin and stimulates the production of melatonin from tiny powerplants within our cells called mitochondria. This is an area where many free radicals are produced that can lead to cancer and aging, and the melatonin here acts as a powerful antioxidant to counteract their destructive effects. So, get up early and take a morning walk to soak in the healing rays.
