Celery Seed (Apium graveolens)

Celery seed which is also know as Ajamoda seeds. It is important to distinguish celery seed from celery since celery juice can pacify pitta while celery seed can aggravate it.

  4. Main Traditional Action: Diuretic, anti-rheumatic
  5. Other Traditional Uses: Help treats gout, stimulant, antispasmodic, diaphoretic heart tonic, good for indigestion, for nerves, and for the prevention of stones in the kidney or gall bladder.

 

Modern Research

Celery and its components have been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-nociceptive, chemoprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. Its has also been shown to have vasodilatory effects as well, gastric antiulcer, antisecretory, and cytoprotective properties and in particular, one component, butylphthalide, may be useful for the treatment of hypertension and may have neuroprotective effects.
