Coriander {Coriandrum sativum}

Coriander is good for all three doshas

 Ayurveda Characteristic and Uses

  1. Effect on doshas – Balances all three doshas, especially Pitta
  2. Taste –pungent, sweet, bitter, astringent
  3. Energetics – Cooling
  4. Main Traditional Action: Assists with digestion, relieves intestinal gas, prevents nausea,good for urinary organs, and stimulates normal appetite.
  5. Other traditional Uses: Coriander seeds and the leaves, called cilantro, have many beneficial effects such as: promoting proper functioning of the liver, acting as a mild diuretic, anti rheumatic and anti arthritic properties, reducing the cholesterol level in the blood, anti microbial and healing effects, inducing proper menstrual cycles and reducing pains, and helping with ulcers and inflammation.

 

Modern Research

Coriander, like many spices, contains antioxidants and has antibacterial activity. It has been shown to provide relief of anxiety and insomnia and found to have both insulin-releasing and insulin-like activity. It has also been shown to have  hypolipidaemic effect, resulting in lowering of levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, and increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein.
