Eranda or Castor Oil Beans {Ricinus Communis}

Castor bean oil is called Eranda in Ayurveda and is especially good for Vata.

  5. Other Uses: Useful for any condition caused by Apana Vata, including chronic constipation, weak agni (agnimandya), srotorodha (clogged srotas). It is also beneficial for Vata disorders including tremors and sciatica and helps in Kapha respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma) by removing Kapha in the stomach through purgation. It is also useful in joint conditions, including arthritis, when applied topically.


Modern Research

Extracts of the leaves found to have antimicrobial properties. Antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties have been found in root bark. The castor bean at low doses has effects on the central nervous system effects and may improve memory consolidation. At higher doses the toxicity of raw castor beans due to the presence of ricin is well-known.
