Licorice {Glycyrrhizza Glabra}

Referred to in Ayurveda as Yashti-Madhu, licorice pacifies both vata and pitta dosha.  Licorice is a key ingredient in both Vata Tea and Pitta Tea.

 

Ayurvedic Characteristics and Uses

  1. Effect on doshas – Decreases or pacifies Vata and Pitta, increases kapha
  2. Taste  – Sweet, bitter
  3. Energetics – Cooling
  4. Main Action –lubricating and purifiying activity, mild laxative, sedative
  5. Other Uses –For cough, cold, bronchitis, asthma, sore throat and laryngitis, gastrointestinal ulcers and heartburn, strengthens the eyes, improves complexion as an external application, and can improve memory
