Main Groups

  1. Lactobacillus: This is one of the largest groups found in probiotics with over 80 species. Perhaps the most common being Lactobacillus acidophilus.
  2. Bifidobacterium: This is another large group found in probiotics with varieties such as Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum.
  3. Baccillus: Some of the common members of this group that are used in probiotics are Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus coagulans.
  4. Streptococcus: Although there are species which can be pathogenic, this group contains Streptococcus thermophilus, which is a starter culture in the manufacturing process of yogurt, mozzarella cheese and other fermented dairy products
