Dr. Kshirsagar was trained in Maharishi Ayurveda and has had a prominent practice in the US. The programs mentioned in Dr. Kshirsagar’s book, The Hot Belly Diet, is described as weight loss programs, when in fact it include all aspects of health. There are interesting similarities between Dr. Kshirsagar’s program and the GAPS diet program used by Dr. Maggie and others. Both eliminate hard to digest food, including wheat, dairy, and sugar, for a period of time, and then very gradually reintroduce different foods to determine what it is that is triggering a reaction in your body. Instead of a bone broth, Ayurveda uses a kitchari soup to rest and repair the gut. Even in Ayurveda, however, certain animal products (such as a bone broth) are prescribed for vegetarians if the patient’s gut lining is too inflamed or damaged to absorb food.
