Samantha and I just finished our new book, The Rest And Repair Diet: Heal your Gut, Improve Your Physical and Mental Health, and Lose Weight. So, is this a weight loss book? It didn’t start that way, but Samantha had been gradually become overweight for some time. We went on the diet together to improve our digestion, which happened surprisingly quickly. After about 9 months, she happened to step on a scale to discover that she had lost 50 pounds—without trying. Since then she has used the Self Discovery program to fine-tune her weight.
Most people think that they have to eat less and exercise more to lose weight and while this is true, it may not be enough, because these changes don’t take the condition of your gut into account. The Rest And Repair Diet is “designed to detox and allow your gut to repair itself, with weight loss as a side benefit. The diet makes use of your body’s natural ability to heal itself and restore your microbiome.” The microbiome is a big topic today. Technically, it’s defined as all of the microorganisms that live in us or on us—including their genetic material.
Ayurveda and the Rest and Repair Diet
Hundreds of studies have shown that there is no magic formula for losing weight. One diet might work for one person and not for another. The Rest and Repair Diet uses the highly effective, time-tested approach of Ayurveda, one of oldest and most successful traditional systems of health in the world. Ayurveda’s primary emphasis is to make sure that your digestion is working properly: You first remove the toxins from your digestive system and body, and then rekindle your digestive power. Resting and detoxifying your gut allows your body’s own repair system to kick in and re-establish balance, healing the gut lining and resulting in better digestive functioning.
The Rest and Repair Diet is a simple step-by-step diet that allows both vegetarians and meat eaters to:
- Heal the Gut
- Improve Digestion and Health
- Lose Weight
Three Main Parts of the Diet
There are three main phases in this diet:
- 1-Week Prep Detox Program
- 3-Week Rest and Repair Phase
- The Self Discovery Lifestyle Program
You begin this diet by detoxifying your body for 1 week, using simple herbal preparations and making a few easy changes in your lifestyle.
After the detox, you start the 3-week Rest and Repair portion of the diet. Remember that this diet is not a fast. Ideally, it should be a feast that improves your microbiome and digestion. Realistically, you should at least feel satisfied after each meal.
When you finish the Rest and Repair phase, you begin your Self Discovery Lifestyle Program. This is a valuable part of your road to health that involves reintroducing specific foods eliminated in the 3-week diet. During this phase, you will keep a Food and Lifestyle Journal so that it will be crystal clear how changes in food and lifestyle affect both your body and mind.
Your Journey to Health
The ancients knew that all disease begins in the gut, but this knowledge became lost over time, and although drugs have proven to be a quick fix for some conditions, chronic diseases are on the rise. Instead of treating symptoms, we need to treat the underlying causes of disease. The right diet and lifestyle can turn off certain destructive genes and turn on beneficial genes and visa versa, but knowingly or unknowingly, most of us have repeatedly made poor choices in diet and lifestyle since we were kids.
The Rest and Repair Diet is an important first step towards lifelong health, integrating modern medicine with the ancient knowledge of Ayurveda. By taking responsibility for your own health and using the Rest and Repair Diet and Lifestyle recommendations, you can begin your journey to a more resilient, healthier, and happier state of mind and body.
