The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline by Dale Bredesen, MD, is an amazing book, which summarizes Dr. Bredesen’s research and offers the first practical program to prevent and cure early Alzheimer’s.
An earlier blog discussed the possibility that gut bacteria might be involved in the onset of Alzheimer’s. Dr. Bredesen shows us exactly how Alzheimer’s develops. It turns out to be the result of an interaction between two processes in our brain, one that helps to create more connections, and one that breaks down connections. Bredesen tells us that scientists have wrongly assumed that the presence of beta amyloid plaque is the cause of the disease. This protein he says, is a side effect of our brain trying to adapt to a poor diet and lifestyle.
Knowingly or unknowingly, we have repeatedly made poor diet choices. Now we find out that food and other aspects of our lifestyle can actually switch certain genes ON and OFF. This phenomenon is called epigenetics. Dr. Bredesen’s protocol recommends a ketogenic diet and numerous changes in lifestyle, to switch ON genes that are good for our health. He also points out the necessity of repairing our gut, emphasizing, like Gut Crisis the Hippocratic and Ayurvedic principle that all disease begins in the gut. Now we have the scientific evidence to support this ancient truth.
Changing the Face of Medicine
In an Elephant Journal article soon to appear, I propose that Dr. Bredesen’s research will change the face of medicine because huge numbers of people will go to their doctors to inquire about his protocol. And this means that doctors are finally going to have to educate themselves about diet, yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and supplements, at last understand why they are so important to our mental and physical health.
There is no alternative. We can’t go on taking a pill and then doing whatever we want. If we keep eating the same junk food, sooner or later we won’t even be able to recognize or even remember what we ate. Dr. Bredesen clearly shows that the only solution is to make specific and long term changes in our life. This program is going to change everything. I highly recommend The End of Alzheimer’s.
