Lactobacillus salivarius is found to live in the gastrointestinal tract and mouth. It is from the phylum Firmicutes. Like other bacteria from the genus lactobacillus it can inhibit pathogenic bacteria (1). Studies have shown that it can improve health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome,  especially alleviating  symptom of excess gas (2). One study also looked at its effects in pancreatic necrosis.  It was demonstrated that a probiotic could in vitro inhibit the growth of pathogens, commonly found in infected pancreatic necrosis. Lactobacillus salivarius was found to be one of the strongest components of this probiotic (3). A further study showed that the  in vivo antimicrobial effects of one strain of L. salivarius depended on its ability to produce a bacteriocin, which inhibited the growth of Gram-positive microorganisms. Finally a preliminary study showed positive effects on children affected by atopic dermititis (5)
